Adding a lift/elevator to an existing building

You need an Austand CH-3000 Series Pre-Assembled MRL Passenger Lift

As the property owner/administrator, you may need to consider adding a lift to the premises, such as offices, retail stores and public facilities when you decide to upgrade existing buildings. This is required to comply with the Building Code of Australia (BCA), especially with respect to disability access to the building. The BCA requires that, if the floor area of either of the upper stories is over 200 m², access in the form of a ramp or lift must be provided to all levels.

Frequently asked questions

Adding a lift is not a common project and raises a number of questions:

  • What is involved in adding a lift?
  • What’s the cost to add a lift?
  • Where can I put the lift in my building?
  • Where can I build a lift shaft? How is a lift shaft built – concrete steel or timber shaft?
  • Do I need an engineer to design it or will an architect be able to? Do I need both?
  • Is my building strong enough to hold a lift? What will it cost to upgrade the building structurally?
  • Do I need local Council approval?

Austand is very happy to discuss all these questions with you before you start and can manage the entire project for you.

Previously, most buildings required structural improvements before a lift could be installed.

Austand has developed the preassembled lift with its own structural shaft.  This has been engineered to Australian Standards and saves further engineering costs and structural building upgrades.
